C.V / Biography
Farzaneh Hosseini (born 1984) is a visual artist based in Tehran, Iran. She has had five solo exhibitions and participated in more than 40 group exhibitions in Iran, France, The UK, Sweden, and the UAE. After finishing an Art degree in high school, she obtained a B.A. in painting from Alzahra University in 2009.
Farzaneh’s professional career started with a solo Linocut exhibition titled “Siah Naghsh” at Khane Honarmandan Artist Forum in 2005 in Tehran. To expand her professional portfolio, she joined Parviz Tanavoli’s first public courses after Iran’s revolution. She was then recruited as an assistant by Tanavoli and worked in his workshop in Tehran from 2007 to 2010. Observing Tanavoli’s technique, and being involved in the creation of his sculptures was a special experience, which led her to choose sculpture as her main focus.
In 2010 her first major sculpture project titled People of City was exhibited in Mah Art Gallery in Tehran. Farzaneh used Mil (bodybuilding equipment used in Zoorkhaneh, the Iranian traditional sport hall) as the main element in her works. In this collection Mil was used to represent Pahlevans (heroes) who use Mil to strengthen themselves for battles and also to support helpless people, but may be subject to unfair treatment by those in power. Implying that regardless of physical and moral strength, one can still be treated unfairly.
In 2012 her second solo project titled Intricate Knot was exhibited in Mah Art Gallery in Tehran. Farzaneh used baton as the main element in this collection to represent oppression that is enforced on citizens by the authorities. Batons were shown in different shapes and positions, to highlight the fact that oppression comes in different forms. With 3 sculpture of this collection she was shortlisted in Magic of Persia Art prize in 2012 in Dubai.
In 2015 her next sculpture project titled Chess pin was exhibited in Mah Art Gallery in Tehran. In this collection, she mixed human figures with chess pieces to create new characters to emphasize on the social roles and limitations each have. This collection and one of them which she created large-scale are permanently installed in Didi Museum in Iran.
In 2017 and during a 3 months art residency in Paris (granted by Institut Francais) Farzaneh and her partner Mehdi Fatehi, collaborated on a common project with the theme of immigration. Lives across borders, memories, realities and expectations was an installation art made of stories, pictures and objects that were collected from more than 20 immigrants based in different countries.
In 2018 she was granted a follow up residency in Paris in Cite International des Art based on her work on the female body and its representation. The project started with a series of drawings inspired by her observations in French museums and exhibitions and she finalized them in non-printed linocut clichés as a representation of women’s problems. Problems that are invisible from a distance and engraved in our culture. Since then she is working on in this project in the forms of sculptures.
During her Art journey, Farzaneh has worked with different materials such as bronze, fiberglass, wood, polyester, papier-mache, video, drawing, prints and even cookies. She uses a variety of techniques to communicate different messages to her audience. This allows her to attract the interlocutor’s attention with the aesthetic aspects of her Art and then provoke questions and thoughts with her concepts. More recently, while working on her sculptures, she has also been involved in theoretical discussions about Art in major online and print outlets in Iran.
